Ingredients
Our essential oils are derived from organically grown plants, where possible, using traditional methods, thereby avoiding the use of chemical pesticides or herbicides. All our oils (for bath & shower, body, face), room fragrances and essences contain 100% natural ingredients. Pure nature with nothing else added.
We choose our product bases wisely too, incorporating vegetable oils and plant derived base materials, such as Evening Primrose Oil and Shea Butter. These have a natural affinity with essential oils, allowing them to work to their best potential.
We do not use:
- Ingredients that have been tested on animals, and neither do we test our finished products on animals.
- GM ingredients or animal derivatives except for silk and beeswax which are animal by-products.
- Mineral or sulphonated oils which can block the performance of the essential oils.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) [we have been using the more gentle Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) in our body washes and this is now being replaced with a natural alternative].
- Petrolatum, Propylene Glycol or PEGs.
- Synthetic colours or fragrance.
- Parabens.
We love using natural ingredients but won't compromise on product safety or stability. That's why, in our gels and lotions, we use a limited number of naturally derived or synthetic preservative systems. We only do this in small doses and only when it's absolutely necessary, making sure that the efficacy of our products is not compromised. We follow the latest research and development in this area and are constantly searching for effective, natural alternatives. Many natural' product houses use alcohol as a preservative, but we believe it dries andstrips the skin. As a result, we currently only use it to beneficial effect in small quantities in our Balance Skin Tonic for oily skin.
From plant to bottle, we're actively involved throughout the production of our products, exercising stringent quality control at every stage. By talking directly to harvesters and distillers, we have traceability right back to the farmer and the original source of the essential oil. We test each consignment in-house and have it analysed by an independent laboratory to ensure it fits our strict criteria.
Packaging
Our packaging is sourced to cause as little damage as possible to the environment. In fact, 95% of it is recyclable. We display recycle symbols on our packaging, and all our cartons are from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) stock, from suppliers with FSC accreditation. We use only recyclable glass and recyclable HDPE plastic.
Throughout our business we have a programme of continuous improvement. Part of this involves ensuring that our carbon footprint is minimised a subject close to our hearts. Following a comprehensive green audit in early 2007, the company has implemented an action plan to reduce our negative environmental impact, which includes environmental procedures with quantitative, measurable targets.
Although we source our raw materials and packaging globally, our products are manufactured in the UK and, even though we transport components via land, sea and air, we use sea freight where we can.
All our raw materials are sourced with care and consideration for the environment, and we always aim for sustainable sourcing. On an ethical basis, we endorse fair trade practices and support Fairtrade' certified ingredients. And, throughout our supply chain, we've introduced environmental and ethical criteria into our selection process.
