If you’ve woken up after a broken night’s sleep in a sluggish haze, that is because sleep is absolutely imperative to our cognitive functioning and health.

Contrary to popular belief, our brain and body don’t shut down during sleep; they both work hard during the night, performing important tasks that promote both mental and physical health, producing hormones that help repair cells and allowing our brain to consolidate memories and process information.

With sleep being a key pillar in our wellbeing, it is no coincidence that our very first Aromatherapy Associates blend, born 35 years ago, was specially created for a restorative night’s rest: Deep Relax.

The Story

In the late 80s, our founders and trained aromatherapists, Sue Beechey and Geraldine Howard, set up their own courses, teaching therapists how to blend oils and use them.

"We were teaching individual oil blending, and people started asking us for our blends. I had created Deep Relax for myself, to treat my own insomnia that had stayed with me since my teens. The oil really, truly worked, so we started giving it to more people. We blended and filled the bottles out of our own kitchens, and it soon became our most sought-after blend

How It Works

Via @thepoorhomme

The magic behind our Deep Relax blend lies in its therapeutic palette of essential oils.

"For me, it is a blend that works therapeutically. I think one of the biggest challenges is understanding the difference between fragrance and therapeutic aromatherapy. If you are doing something for the mind, the aromas need to be carefully chosen. The Deep Relax blend is very complex – with essential oils that work together for the most effective aromatherapeutic experience."

The Blend of Pure Essential Oils

Vetivert grass, where our Vetivert essential oil is sourced - also known as the
“Oil of Tranquility”

To relieve her insomnia, Geraldine created a deeply tranquil blend with a grounding, woody heart: combining earthy and sedating Vetivert, soothing Camomile and comforting Australian Sandalwood. This naturally relieving and intensely calming palette of essential oils slows a racing mind and readies the entire body for restorative sleep - it’s efficacy is second to none.

Since the day it was blended in Geraldine’s kitchen, our Deep Relax oil has remained untouched. For over 35 years, this blend has become a bedtime hero, helping many struggling with sleep enjoy the rest they deserve, and winning multiple awards over the past three decades.

Routine Is Key

For the best chance to sleep well, you should follow a ritual to relax both the body and mind. Our work with Dr Tara Swart, a doctor of neuroscience and Senior Lecturer at MIT, suggests that adopting an aromatherapy ritual will rewire the brain to associate that time, smell and practice with a specific feeling.

Start with clearing your thoughts and let the body rest, soaking in a warm bath.  Slow down by pouring one capful of Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil into hands to warm the oil.

Slowly breathe in the therapeutic aromas & massage onto torso before stepping into the bath. Follow with our rich Nourishing Body Treatment and finish your ritual by spraying our Sleep Mist onto pillows & pyjamas before tucking in for an undisturbed night. Sleep well.
